Smith Tabata Incorporated was established in 1996 through the merger of two long-standing Eastern Cape law firms: Smith, Tabata, Van Heerden & Siwisa, known for their human rights litigation work, and Barnes & Ross, specialists in commercial and property law. Currently, the firm holds a B-BBEE Level 1 status, with four of the six equity directors coming from historically disadvantaged backgrounds and holding the majority share in ownership and management control.
The firm has grown into the largest legal practice in the Eastern and Southern Cape, with offices in East London, King William’s Town, Port Elizabeth, Queenstown, Mthatha, George, Knysna and St. Francis Bay. Smith Tabata Incorporated has six equity directors, nine directors, ten associates and over seventy support staff, making it well-equipped to handle various legal matters, including Conveyancing, High Court and Magistrate’s Court Litigation, Debt Recovery, Commercial Practice, Labour Law, and Public Law.
